WHO WE ARE The Children’s Book Project (CBP) is an innovative non-governmental organization that improves literacy skills amongst schoolchildren and fosters a reading culture in Tanzania. WHAT WE DO CBP supports teachers to teach reading and writing in child-centered ways, while working to develop libraries filled with quality reading and learning materials. CBP also supports the Tanzanian publishing industry to produce quality books for children and youth. WHY IT MATTERS Resources for learning are in high demand in Tanzania, especially books written in Kiswahili, the language of instruction in primary school. CBP engages education officials, community members and the general public in dialogue about the value of reading and writing as fundamental to individual and collective development. OUR RESULTS Almost all writers, illustrators and publishers in Tanzania credit CBP for supporting the book sector and setting high standards for children’s books. To date, CBP has supported the production of over 250 titles, mostly in Kiswahili, ranging from early readers to more advanced informational texts.
