The origin of the National Library is the Bernard Free Library which was the first public free Library in Myanmar established on 21st February 1883. In 1952, it was transferred to the Government and opened as the National Library of Myanmar under the Ministry of Culture. The library has been situated in Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar for 58 years. In 2010, it was planned for moving to Nay Pyi Taw, the capital of Myanmar. On 3rd May 2013, the library was officially opened for public as the National Library at national level.
