| Evelyn Rawski was born on February 2, 1939, in Honolulu, Hawaii, of Japanese-American ancestry. Her mother was a registered nurse, her father an accountant. She attended Kapalama Elementary School, R. L. Stevenson Junior High School, and Roosevelt High School, all in Hawaii. Rawski then attended Cornell University, graduating in 1961 with a bachelor’s degree, with high honors, in economics. Inspired by Knight Biggerstaff, a Chinese historian at Cornell, Rawski decided to pursue historical studies in graduate school. She attended Radcliffe College, earning a master’s degree in East Asian regional studies in 1962, then Harvard University for a Ph.D. in history and Far Eastern languages, which she earned in 1968. She is fluent in Chinese, Japanese, French, and Manchu. Rawski’s first academic appointment was in the department of history at the University of Pittsburgh, where she still teaches. From 1967 to 1972 she was assistant professor; from 1973 to 1979 she was associate professor; and since 1980 she has been professor. In 1988 Rawski was also named research professor for the University Center for International Studies. Rawski has written extensively on Ch’ing dynasty history. Her most recent work is Harmony and Counterpoint: Ritual Music in Chinese Context (1996), edited with Bell Yung and Rubie S. Watson. She has written or edited five other books and twenty scholarly articles, publishing in U.S. and Chinese publications. In addition, Rawski has completed another book, Ritual and Rulership in East Asia , and is in the process of working on a long-term project on the evolution of the Ch’ing imperial institution and its political, ritual, and social context. Rawski has received postdoctoral grants and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Woodrow Wilson International Center, Harvard University, the University of Pittsburgh, the American Council of Learned Societies, the University of Michigan, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Joint Committee on Chinese Studies. She has been a member of the editorial boards of Ming Studies, Peasant Studies Newsletter , and Sinica Leidensia , and was associate editor of Encyclopedia of Social History . She served as an elected member of the board of directors of the Association for Asian Studies and as council member of the Center for Social History at Carnegie-Mellon University. She has served on and chaired the John K. Fairbank Prize of the American Historical Association and as a member of several American Council of Learned Societies committees on Chinese studies. Rawski is currently vice president of the Association of Asian Studies; in 1996 she will assume the presidency of the organization. Evelyn Rawski is married to Thomas G. Rawski. Her interests include Oriental carpets, cooking, and reading mystery stories.
